extrude gives error, switch to 'extend faces'?

When trying to extrude i get an error message saying:

Error: Tool body creation failed Extent boolean fail. The termination entity might be not fully intersected with the tool body built along the operation direction

But when i switch from 'chain faces'to 'extend faces'in the dialog box the extrude seems to work!

So what is tehe difference here? Will this affect the way i'll have to mirror the 3 tabs i just extruded? (one on the top, two on the right)

Is this error a result of something else i did wrong?

if you set the extent >to object and you only have a planar face reference you will not be able to "chain faces" because is only one, chain faces refers to tangent connection by choosing only one reference, so in this case extend faces is what you want.

Chain Faces vs Extend Faces in Extrude:

Chain faces will take the selected face, and propagate (chain) to any adjacent faces, to see if the extrude can be terminated if the termination includes the adjacent faces.

Extend faces is only available for some kinds of selection (planes, other simple geometry).  This option does a geometric extension of the selected face, and the extrude is terminated there.  For instance, if a plane is picked, that plane will be extended until it terminates the extrude.

Here is a simple screencast that illustrates:

Hi @jeff_strater,

As much as I know, the chain faces works only on faces of the same profile, but what you showed in your screencast shows another function of it, it's kind of selecting by itself, and why didn't it select the face parallel to the one you selected ( behind it )?
