Exporting .STP with color?

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hi,

I have been using Fusion 360 and would like to export my models to my ECAD software, Altium..

There seems to be no options when doing a .stp export. I would like to the appearance colors of my parts so that when I import into my altium libraries, the parts won't all be grey...

My father uses solid works and when he sends me models in .stp, they keep the appearances and come in color.

I've read in the past that Altium doesn't keep colors with newer .step versions, but even when I re-import the .stp file back into fusion 360 the whole part comes out grey.

any solutions?

Thanks

Files are exporting with colors now.

The issue I was having with files scaling wrong on export was not in 360. Was another program I used since 360 was having issues at the time.

Well it all worked for a day or so. Now some files export with color and some dont.. Hope this can be fixed soon, as I want to share a bunch of my files but not without the colors

When you export these, the software that opens the exported models also needs to be able to show the colors. What program is opening your exports and not showing colors?

Can you post an example of a model that exports with color, and one that does not? It's also quite possible you are using Fusion specific materials/appearances that do not translate with STEP, in which case you would want to narrow your use of appearance materials to those that export well in STEP.

The models that dont have colors all worked before one of the last 2 updates.. I use Diptrace PCB designer, Freecad,Cad Exchanger, and have re uploaded them back to Fusion 360 as step..

For some reason step export does not honor colors applied at the child subcomponent level. This means a subcomponent of a subcomponent.

The simple two pin connector is a root body with some face overrides for the gold.

To make the other file work, I moved all the bodies into the top level of the subcomponent.

The round trip step file looks like this when opened again in Fusion.

I'll ask why this is. It may be a limitation to step itself, based on the simple structural change made to defeat it. In any case, I'll try to get a better answer and perhaps log an improvement request to honor step colors at all levels of assembly.

Thanks,

Seems odd that it worked fine before one of the last 2 updates..

I'm not sure it did, but if so this would be a higher priority. But only some testing on old builds will tell. Thanks for letting us know.

@bronc3buster842001

This has been reported to me as fixed for the January 18 update. Please give it a try after that and let us know if it works to your satisfaction.

Hi @bronc3buster842001 - we found an issue in the update yesterday, and delayed releasing it until today (~6pm PST).

Software updated, and it works.. First file I exported with all its colors.

So was it a bug or something that got screwed up in an update somewhere along the line
