Export to .OBJ broken...Fusion 360 crashes consistently

Tried this on a few designs, as well as a simple model...Fusion 360 crashes every time.  Easy to re-create:

  • model a simple cube
  • Enter into "Create Base Feature" mode
  • Use the Mesh --> BRep to Mesh command to turn the box into a mesh
  • Exit out of Base Feature mode
  • Right click on mesh body in navigation tree, and select Export to .OBJ
  • Crashy time!

I tried this os a complex model then the simple one above...crash every time.

I was _attempting_ to see if colors were exported in the .OBJ format, but this crash happens even if the model does not have any colors assigned to it.

Thanks!

Hi nkloski,

What are the settings you are currently using during the BRep to Mesh conversion?  Right now when I attempt to export to .OBJ I am not getting a crash, but rather an error that the translation service failed to export.  I am following up on this issue, but still want to understand how your crash is happened.  Would you be able to attach a screenshot of the BRep to Mesh settings you are using?

Cheers,

I get the crash after just accepting the defaults:

Hi Nick,

Okay a couple questions, myself and another on my team have both attempted the steps you outlined and we aren't crashing, so I want to try and figure out what is happening.

Are any of the models that you are trying to export to .obj not working or is it only leveraging the steps you provided above?

Are you getting to the save location message?  If so where are you saving the file to?

If you have access to another machine with Fusion 360 on it, does it also seem to have this issue?  If you don't not a problem just working to rule out potential scenarios.

Cheers,

Joel

Thanks for following up!  Answering your questions:

  • All objects are not working, no matter where they come from.  But as far as I know, the ONLY way to get to the .OBJ export function is to generate a mesh body either by importing one or converting an existing shape.
  • If I import an .STL or an .OBJ in create base feature mode, and then try to save out out = CRASH
  • If I create a cylinder in the Sculpt environment, and convert it to mesh and try to export -->  CRASH
  • This happens the exact same on my desktop computer as it does on my laptop.
  • I am getting to the save location message, and once I click save --> CRASH
  • Every time, I get an error report geneator come up that lets me send the data to Autodesk.....the most recent one was:  CER_113866527  if that helps

Thanks!

Do you have any pending Windows updates? Could you try installing any pending updates for the computer to see if this helps?

Thanks,

Sadly, that did nothing.....the laptop was just updated before the test, and the main computer had only three small updates pending....but I applied those, rebooted, and tried the test again, and the crash was still present.

I was really only trying to see if the .OBJ export would somehow magically have the color information assigned into it, so I could 3D print something in color, so if the .OBJ export does not export colors/materials then this really does not matter to me (.STL export works just fine).

When you're saving the OBJ file, are you saving it to a local hard drive or is it to a network drive? Does it make any difference if you change the save directory?

Thanks,

No difference...I was originally saving to my desktop. I just tried saving to another hard drive that the OS is not installed on....still crashes.

Do you run the same type of anti-virus on both machines by any chance?

Since I'm not able to reproduce the issue and it seems to impact export OBJ command when tested in different variation, this leads me to believe there is a specific conflict with something in the environment. Would it be possible to test the following?

1. Close Fusion 360

2. Disable all anti-virus software

3. Re-launch Fusion 360 and retest Save As OBJ command?

Thank you,

I appreciate your tenacity! I don't run any anti-virus, other than Windows Defender in Windows 8.1. This is true for both my desktop as well as laptop.

Does doing a clean uninstall and re-install help on either of the machines?

I've reached out for some assistance internally, I'll be sure to follow up as soon as I learn anything.

Thank you for reporting this issue.

I tried on a third computer, same crash.

I completely uninstalled as per the instructions on the web page, reinstalled, and....same crash, no change in behavior.

Thanks for checking.

Is there any chance that this is somehow data specific? I know you mentioned that you were able to do this with a simple cube every time, but it is strange that I'm unable to reproduce the issue from scratch. Perhaps if you record a screencast of the issue, it will help us to locate a missing step? Feel free to send me a public link of a sample file as well. I'd like to get to the bottom of this!

Cheers,

Sure...here is a screencast of a simple cube I modeled:

(it is still processing on the Autodesk servers, but I assume this will be the link...)

Progress!

I believe this error is being generated due to a known issue with the Flat Shading Option in the Display settting of the Navigation bar. If you disable (uncheck) this option, the Save As OBJ error should go away.

Looking forward, this issue should be addressed in the upcoming June 20th release.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Thanks,
