Error converting body to shell

Remote.jpgDear Fusion 360 Community,

I'm working on a Arduino Remote for my RC Car and for this i need a fitting enclosure.

My problem is that i cant convert this body into a shell. I checked for everything i could think of and even started the modeling three times over, it still gives me errors. Now i dont know what to do anymore.

The Body is made in the sculpting enviroment and after some tidying up in the patch workspace converted to a Solid.

In the attachments i added the project file and i would be very grateful if someone could take a look at it.

Deeply appreciated

Philipp Schmid

Hi @Anonymous,

This is very simple. Just cut the body in the middle and then use the Shell command 😉

Cheers / Ben

Thank you for the fast reply.

After some fiddeling around with cutting up the body i discovererd that the error seems to be caused by some part of the model (i could make the shell with a thickness from 0 to 1 mm but everything above that gave me an error. I need at least 2mm).

I decided that i would start again and check if i can convert it into a shell every few steps. It didnt take long until it stopped working.

The blue line shows the form the body had with working shell. The red line the additional modeling hat caused it to stop working. I cant imagine that the model is too complex for fusion to handle. I think i'm doing something wrong while sculpting it. But i cant imagine what.

Like before i added the Fusion 360 file.

Thanks again

The problem is the T-Spline you designed. As a beginner you should never use triangles in any T-Splines. It is best to design with quad faces only so polygons that have 4 vertices. 5 is OK if used sparingly but not more.

Also when you model most of it in Box view mode, flaws in the model will be come immediately apparent.

Creasing is what really is interfering with shelling and that particularly applies when edge loops are creased only partially.

I got this to shell somewhat OK up to 4 mm.

At least now the T-Spline is quads only 😉

Thank you very much

Your explanation really helped me to understand how i can fix these errors and i now have the model how i wanted it to be.
