Can someone elaborate on the functionality of the offset function in Fusion 360?

I feel like it is very inconsistent. For example, sometimes I can extrude sketches that were based on offsetting sketches and other times it gives me errors. Another example is sometimes I can offset a shape (closed spline that is very circular) and other times it gives me an error.

It does what the name of the function indicate, but it has limitations and probably a bug or two involved.

If you present your "problem cases" maybe through a screencast, maybe we can address these better.

Hi Sarah - as @TrippyLighting mentioned, attaching your problem cases as .f3d files is the best way for us to understand what you're facing, along with screenshots and videos where possible 🙂

@wilkhui@TrippyLighting- it happens so inconsistently that I don't know when I can get it to work and get a screen cast of it. I've been trying to figure it out for that past few months and have had no success.

Hi Sarah - if you get a chance to detail some specific examples that would be great, at the moment I don't have any way of knowing what you're seeing so the more information you can provide the better Smiley Happy

Example of what to do when you get a result you didn't expect:

1. Try to remember what you just did

2. Hit 'undo'

3. Save a version of the file (before things went wrong)

4. Try to get the unexpected result again

5. If you find a repeatable method, recordings are invaluable to show to others what's happening (have a look at Screencast)

6. Start a new post explaining what's going wrong, include the method, recording and the file/s from step 3

Hope that you get to enjoy the holidays, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

The workflow is the same every time.

I offset a sketch and try and loft it to another offset sketch. This workflow works about 50% of the time
