Drawings in Fusion... Leave a lot to be desired.

Hi,

1.  Why is the drawings editor in Fusion SO SLOW?  It takes about 3 minutes to load up when I open and existing drawing or start a new drawing.  It crashes about every 4th time I open drawing editor.  It always seems glitchy (the screen flickers with pixels of other open pages at the start).  This seems like it should be a very lightweight part of the software but it seems to be chewing up tons of processing resources.  I wish it was simple like the old Inventor product.  I don't know if anyone can do anything about this, but I would sure appreciate it if it could be fixed.  I apply for patents and I need my drawings.

2.  The units in my drawings seem to default to decimals.  I went to preferences and selected inches and fractions.  However, still, the drawing will put .875 instead of 7/8.  I hope there is a simple solution to this.

3.  I wish the shaded option was still available on views.  Is it possible to bring that back?

Thanks in advance.

Roger

Hi @sohnrog,

Thank you for the feedback.  Drawings is very much a work in progress, but we working hard to improve it.  We have a large team dedicated to Fusion Drawings.  This thread http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/design-and-documentation/drawing-tools-and-features/m-p/5654519#M24801 discusses all of the new features that will be available in the next major update.

On your specific issues:

  1. Performance - We are working on improving this.  This is requiring significant effort, so I don't have a definitive date for resolution of this issue, but rest assured we have an entire team working on it.
  2. Fraction display - this is on our list. Let me get back to you when I have more details on this.
  3. Shaded Views - this is very high on our list.  We have a team already working on this feature.

Thank you again for providing feedback.  We use the feedback we receive to determine the priority of new features.

We are in 2016, any update on inch fraction display in drawings?  Doesn't seem to work right now.

Thanks,

Hi @Anonymous,

Welcome to the forum!  Fractional dimensions in drawings are on our radar.  Please vote for this feature in the idea station http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/ideastation-request-a-feature-or/design-drawing-fractional-dimensions/idi-p/5829865 .  The more votes a particular feature gets the higher its priority.  Please take a look at our roadmap blog here to see what is coming next https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/fusion-360-product-roadmap/bg-p/79.

Thank you,

@kris_berg Those functions should have been be part of it from the start. It can be sometimes frustrating that Fusion gets a new tool but then fundamental components are missing making the product today feel like a pretty amazing tools set however with a pretty clear patch work approach.

It is a general experience in my design work that often I hit a limitation in Fusion which should not be there and I need then to figure out how to work around it in the mean time.

Maybe it might make sense to hold off releasing a module till it reached a fundamental level that is seriously needed.

Just a friendly observation.

@cekuhnen,

Fusion is a product that is used by a wide range of industries.  Specific requirements that are desired by one industry may not be needed by another.  As a team we choose to release functionality that provides a basic workflow instead of waiting until it meets needs of all industries.  With the help of our community we continue to add functionality that builds in additional workflows.

@promm I understand your viewpoint which is valid. But if fundamental options or tools are not present but are standard or are common then this gets problematic. This is a general observation about fusion 360 which I think a large part of the cummunity would agree with me.

For example sketch still does not support constraining a line tangent to a curve which is a very basic thing drawings export terrible paths and so on.

Fusion as great solid modeling tools but since its inception the surfacing tools remain the same with improvements having been postponed that would finally provide needed surfaring options l[ike g1 along rails.

Alias as forced you to work in a certain way however at least you can build everything you want because it provides to the tools for it.

This is not means in a negative way just an honest observation.

@cekuhnen,

I appreciate your opinion, please keep in mind that these are things that you consider "basic".  I would also like to point out that you can constrain a line tangent to a curve by constraining the tangent handle to a line.  While this might not be the implementation in a way that you consider acceptable and it is something that I would like to improve, it can be done.  On this topic, I would like to explain that other CAD products do the same, however they automate the process and hide the point / handle behind the scenes.  As we continue to evolve our spline will advance with CV's, our loft and sweep tools will get edge continuity control and workflows will become more streamlined.

@promm

My mistake I meant to say a perpendicular to an arc or circle or spline.

I come from Rhino and Ashlar Cobalt. I started with CAD when I was 14. I am 40 now.

It makes me lift my eye brows when I see professional packages like OnShape talking about powerful design tools

and then you cannot make a line perpendicular to a circle or spline? True with a circle one could make a line coincident to the arc

and then colinear to a line that is coincident to the circles center and you added and extra line just to get this done.

And like with tangent this simply should be possible with perpendicular. We also dont draw a line from the center of the circle to the circle so we can make a line perpendicular to the line so it is tangent to the arc.

I am not stating this have to be copied 1:1. One if the main reasons Fusion is easy to teach unlike Rhino is that it is smart with tools.

Loft in Fusion combines many tools into on system where Rhino has many tools for.

It is just my students noticed sometimes the missing details and they by far are beginners.

Anyway I said - this is not to be understood as a criticism or attack - just an observation.

I am really looking forward to the CV curve and also further refined surfacing tools because then you could finally really compete

with products like SW and such.
