Drawing views do not follow model views

Hello Fusion 360 Team,

When creating a drawing, the orientation of the model and the views in the drawing are not the same, e.g. 'Top' becomes 'Left'.

For generating the different views this is not too much of a problem, but then the annotations seem follow the 'new' orientation, the text appears upside down.

For a model with a distinct 'up' side, the dimension annotations are, I think, more difficult to read.

Many thanks and kindest regards,

Ludo

Thanks for bringing this up. I'm having difficulty reproducing the issue with drawings on my machine - are you consistently seeing this or is it occasional? If you could upload the model to A360 and share a link I can go ahead and see if I can reproduce it with your model.

There is also a possibility that if this is occurring when you are projecting views, as opposed to setting the orientation of base view - you may be in First Angle Projection when you intend to be in Third Angle Projection. To adjust this, select preferences from your account drop dwon in the upper right, and there you can toggle between the two. Currently preferences only effect newly created drawings so once you make changes you will need to create a new drawing to see your new preferences.

I really hope this helps, and if you could upload the design and drawing and share a link, the team and I would be happy to take a look.

Best,

Scott

Hello Scott,

Included the Zipped model.

I did check the Projection Angle setting and it is 'Third Angle Projection’.

When I create a new drawing, the base view I get is called ‘Front’ it is, however, the ‘Left' view of the model, I have to select ‘Top’ to get the model ‘Front’ view.
I assumed that the view cube views would be reflected in the drawing views.
I tried with a new simple model then I get the expected results, it seems to be related specifically to the included file.

Apparently there is something wrong with my file.

Many thanks for your reply and for looking in to this.

Kindest regards,
Ludo

Hello Scott,

I have tried different things and it seems that when you change the front view (I mean the side to consider as front) in the ViewCube the drawing 'front' view does not follow this.

Hope this helps.

Kindest regards,

Ludo

Hi Ludo, Thanks so much for sharing the model! It's evident that the issue here goes beyond what I had thought.

Have you seen this situation occur in any of your other designs? I'll circulate it around some team members here and see if I can find a solution for you. Will be back in touch shortly.

Scott

Hello Scott,

Done some more testing and it appears that the initial orientation of the ViewCube when you start a design, is kept by Drawing, when you later change the orientation of the design (set this view to Front) then this 'new' orientation is not reflected in a new drawing.

For an existing drawing of the design, it is probably not desirable to update to this new orientation, but I think that when creating a new drawing, the actual orientation should be used.

I guess that the orientation of the model could be 'fixed' in every new drawing, with no orientation update for existing drawings of the same model.

Often drawings are created when a model is considered to be finished, most of the time I only then decide on the 'front' view for my drawing. With designs where there is no 'natural' orientation, this may be not too much of a problem, when designing, like a chair or so, this can be.

Probably there is a very good reason for this behaviour, and a workaround is not too difficult, when designing something with a distinct 'front' or 'top' side , I start in the initial orientation of the ViewCube.

Thanks for looking in to this.

Best regards,

Ludo

Thanks Ludo!

That looks to be it - and to your point, bringing any orientation changes into new drawings is an element we should be exploring. I really do appreciate you bringing up and figuring this out. If it is helpful at all, you can reset your home view to a position where it doesn't spin the whole cube around by positioning it to the corner between Top/Left/Front, right clicking on the view cube and selecting "set current view as home" and selecting one of the options. It looks, and this is just a hypothesis, that "Reset home" in that same menu is doing something unintended and may potentially be causing part of the issue.

I'll be looking into it on this end, and if anything else comes up or there's anything I might be able to help with, please do let me know.

Best,

Scott
