Dimensions - how to control the direction of the dimension change?

I am a beginner to fusion 360 and i am having a very basic issue and I cannot find the solution online. I am sure it s very simple but it has stumped me on several projects.  I can easily work around it but i want to do things properly.

When I dimension the a vertical line the program is pushing the horizontal line connected to it down instead of pushing the vertical line up. I am following along with tutorials and am doing exactly what is being done in the videos but a different outcome is happening.

I have tried point to point dimensioning, selecting the vertical line and dimensioning and tried dimensioning from the top point to the horizontal line all with the same outcome. I just feel like i am missing a simple but crucial detail here...

Thanks for any help.

The horizontal line needs to be (fully) constrained before changing the vertical line.

Thank you.

How would i go about constraining that line?  The tutorial i am following along with they only drew the triangle and dimensioned the vertical line and it moved the vertical line upwards from the existing horizontal line.

I just got it to function properly by re drawing the triangle starting with the horizontal line instead of the vertical and it worked the way i wanted it to.  this is good i just don't understand why.

I'd guess in the tutorial they have auto project enabled. Auto project can create a lot of references you don't need so the default set to disabled. You can just press P and project just the corner point or try enabling auto project in your preferences. There are 2 autoproject options but personally I uncheck both and manually project what I need.

This screencast shows how constraining the geometry changes the behaviour:
