Dimension diagonal line

One frustration in sketches is the inability to add a dimension to a diagonal line. It either snaps to the horizontal, or vertical dimension, but won't snap to the distance between the endpoints. Further, you can't just dimension the distance between the endpoints of a line. I was surprised to not find this when I searched the idea forum.

I'm frustrating about it. I NEED to have angled dimension like  the length of a slop line, or a line length of a triangle.

You can add an aligned dimension, just move to one side of the line and before the dimension shows click the left mouse button and you'll get an aligned dimension.

Here's a screencast.

You can also do it explicitly, using the context menu (right mouse button), and choosing Aligned:

Hi Jeff, I sometimes have problems getting a horizontal or vertical dimension between two points.

At other times, by moving around I get the option of all 3 directions, but sometimes it just won't do hor/vert.  I found your post while searching, but my right-click menu is different:

Any suggestions please?

the alignment type is determined by zones during the drag to place the dimension text:

if the line is nearly vertical or horizontal, the aligned zone can be quite small.  The context menu that allows you to change the type only appears during placement of the text, it cannot be changed afterward.  See the screencast:

Hi Jeff, yes I was aware of the "zones".  Sometimes it works AOK, but today (and in the past at times) it's not working on several attempts on different sets of diagonal points. No idea why not:

Could use that right-click context.  🙂

Hmmm... tried that, not getting the same commands in the context menu.

Plus, in Undo, there are two "Undo Sketch Dimension" entries - delete one, and the dimension turns red. Only the second Undo does the undo.

F360 version is 2.0.10148...  puzzling behavior.

Normal tools do not work so well when you are editing 3d sketches,

untick 3d sketch, until you can not do it in a 2d sketch.

Might help...

Hi Dave, didn't realise I was in 3D... F360 must have "remembered" that when I created the sketch.  Still no good, none of the following helped:.

  • Turned 3D off > try again
  • Finish Sketch > Edit > try again
  • Save > Close F360 > Open > try again
  • Run Compute All, no issues found
  • Copy to new Sketch > try again

So I tried a new sketch with only 2 offset lines and tried the Tool - no problem, context menu showing expected options.   So I'd say something is corrupt in this sketch, I'll have to redo it from scratch. Bugger, not the first time.  Unless there's something odd going on with my GPU, dunno?

@jeff_strater, I'll keep and rename the sketch to "Beam Alignments - Corrupt", so if you want to pass it on as a possible bug, PM me your email to include you in the Project.  FWIW, I copied the 2 beam Profiles into this problem sketch from other sketches:
    Platform > Beam Fwd > Sketches > Profile2

Platform > Beam Aft > Sketches > Profile

Ah, I was probably not clear enough, once a 3d sketch, always a 3d sketch if all articles are not on the sketch plane, so even unticking, does not make it 2d.  Select all and right click, select Move to sketch plane, will convert it to 2d, but you have to be super careful that the sketch plane is the appropriate / expected one, or all hell, could break loose.

Baby steps and Undo if you break it.

Might help....

New sketch, still some issues with the Dimension Tool.  Works OK on 2 test points, but unable to get a second dimension from the Origin to a construction line. A bit frustrating.

Can you File>Export your *.f3d file to your local drive and then Attach it here to a Reply?

You were right Dave. I went to Front view, selected everything and returned the Sketch Plane... and the Tool worked again! There must have been a point or something just off the plane whilst I was in 3D.

Can't, the file is now over the 71Mb upload limit, otherwise I would have attached it. However, looks like @davebYYPCY was right, the sketch was still in 3D even though it wasn't apparent. Works now that I've "returned all to sketch plane", and reverted to 2D.

Uhmm, couldn't you delete everything except for the sketch in question in a copy of the file?
