Dimension Arrows.

Hi all,

How do you edit the dimension arrows in a drawing. I have a full design that needs dimensions and in one area all the arrows overlap each of the dimensions.

Thanks.

Any update on the arrow conundrum?

Also -- Is there a way to change line styles of sketch on the drawing?

Also -- after adding a sketch to a drawing, it doesn't seem like there's a way to get an annotation to point to the sketch, only to edges on the original view.

Also -- There doesn't seem to be a good way to dimension the sketch on the drawing. After adding a dimension, I can still drag the sketch lines, and the dimension seems to just be floating.. I can drag it anywhere on the drawing. This behavior doesn't make any sense to me.

As is it seems easier to just export to PDF and annotate if I want to draw any lines or annotations on a drawing view.

Hi @jonathan.watson.usa

There is a lot to unpack in that post... Here we go!

Arrows: The overall size of dimensions (text and arrows) can be controlled by editing the Text Height Group on the drawing. We have an upcoming project planned called "Leader flip" (flip arrow direction), check out the public roadmap, it's a yellow bubble (bottom left), under "Text & Advanced Dimensions".

Styles of Sketch: You can change the linetype and lineweight of sketches on a drawing as you are creating them.

ClintBrown3D_0-1652938917250.png

Sketches from the Modelling environment, however, are shown as "Phantom" lines

ClintBrown3D_1-1652939131973.png

Model sketches are best for adding dimensions to, as they are scaled with the model and are constrained to the geometry. Sketches on the drawings sheet are unconstrained and at a scale of 1:1.

I'd love to meet up with you to discuss your experiences with sketches. If you're up for it, here is a link to my calendar, please book a session with me, and we can chat on Zoom. I can also share some of the future projects that we have in the works.

Come on Autodesk?  Seriously, a function to flip the arrows?

This is a thread i've been following for quite a while. I work with other CAD and (very basic) graphics programs where dimensioning functionality is way better. Autodesk please pick up your game and respond to these user requests. These big chunky arrowheads on the dimensions make my drawings look unprofessional, and they become difficult to read. I use an Architectural tick, I'd like the ability to customise and resize these arrowheads, please.

Interesting thread.  Often I have the issue of arrows crowding my dimension placement in Fusion.  When I work on structural programs in other software it's all tics (slashes instead of arrows). Not the mechanical standard but it works in that environment.

In AutoCAD I would use dotted points on the indside of two tight dimensions, which would only change the arrow heads you picked.  A very simple but elegant solution.

A good workaround I use sometimes to force a leader off the dimension is to create a temporary dimension,  then use chain dimension for the one I want, and delete the temporary one. It at least helps provide a little more control since the dimension now has  leader. A nice feature of course would be to change any given dimension to  leader style without having to do this workaround!

Hi @designfilter & @Garret_H

As I mentioned above, we are looking at 2 projects, the first, is "Flip Arrow", this one is underway and will be available in an upcoming build. The second project will give you more flexibility around arrow heads. Internally, the project is called "Object properties MVS2" - partly shown on the roadmap as "Leader Styles"

ClintBrown3D_1-1680686473072.png

With "Object properties MVS2"/"Leader Styles", you'll be able to specify the type of arrow that you would like to see on your dimensions. Our UX team has recently finished the designs for this, and the development team will be starting work on it very soon.

An update since my last reply to @jonathan.watson.usa, We are working on adding even more flexibility to "Custom" text height groups, this is also part of our "Object properties MVS2" project. Since my last reply, model sketches can now be tweaked to look the way you'd like. Their line types and color can now be changed in document settings.

I'd like to invite anyone on this thread that wants to give direct feedback to the team, or wishes to dive a bit deeper into what we are working on, to please book a 30-minute session with me, and we can chat on Zoom. Here is the link to my calendar, I can also share some of the future projects that we have in the works (see the public roadmap here). I'd love to hear from you directly! Or if a good old-fashioned email is more your style, feel free to ping me Clint. Brown {a} Autodesk.com

Hi Clint,  always a pleasure, thanks.

Here's an example of the used of a dotted dimension arrow from AutoCAD that I'd used previously. In this case it was done with a script and was a little temperamental as it would require the "first" dimension lines to be the two that met and could be flipped to the dotted style, so planned placement was key.

Nice and simple to do it this way, in the case of dimensioning something really narrow like say a snap ring groove it allows a fit that may not be able to be achieved with just arrow flips. Being able to put dots on both sides with dimension leaders is also necessary sometimes.

Is there any update on this very basic feature. It really should be at the highest priority at this point after several years of updates. It makes a world of a difference for such as simple feature.

Hi @amonkiew

Arrow head styles are currently under development. Please keep an eye on the public roadmap, as soon as it's ready, it will go through QA, then into an Insider build, then to production, when it will be available to the public.

The absolute lethargic response the Autodesk has taken to this issue and the decision to stop supporting windows 10 is the last straw. I'm switching to onshape.

Hi @jonathan.watson.usa

I'm really sorry that you feel this way.  I want to ensure that you have all the correct information, and I genuinely want to talk to you. I feel that most of your concerns are either under development (pending imminent release), possible via a slightly different workflow than you have used, or on our roadmap.

1) We are not stopping support for Windows 10. We are just no longer supporting Win 10 version 1809, which was placed into "end of service" by Microsoft back in 2020, see Microsoft's announcement here. Fusion's system requirements list newer versions of Windows 10 as fully supported.

2) Flip Arrows is expected in an upcoming major release of Fusion, below is a snapshot of the working code, the feature will be available from the menu, as well as on a right click.

3) As I have previously offered, I'd love to chat to you about your specific requirements, I want to understand your workflows, and show you some of mine. If you're up for it, here is a link to my calendar, please book a 30-minute session with me, and we can chat on Zoom (Note that times are in 24:00 format, so 03:00 is 3am, 15:00 is 3pm).

I'd also be happy to show you some of the new tools that are coming soon. BUT if a good old-fashioned email is more your style, feel free to ping me Clint. Brown {a} Autodesk.com

Arrow flipping is now in Fusion. We'd love to hear your feedback!

With the addition of flip arrows it still seems as if we need more features to clean up dimensions. The flip arrow feature does not always work properly in small dimensions grouped together. The .225 dimensions has line extending on the right and a gap on the left. The .1 dimension is to tight for the arrows and also has a extending line on the right. This is with small text at 0.07.

I also have to chime in on this discussion because I feel just as frustrated as everyone else, specifically that there is not the option to change dimension lines from arrows to tick marks. I've used several other Autodesk programs where this is a built-in feature. I am new to fusion 360 and am only using it because that is what the person prior to me used. In all my designing I have never used arrows because it looks unprofessional and gets extremely messy when dealing with small units. It's very odd to me that there is such limited ability to customize dimension style. To be fair, the person before me was using this program to design furniture and I don't believe this program is appropriate for my industry.  Regardless, I'm going to be looking into other design programs that better fit my needs and allows me to draft to my standards of professionalism.

Hi @hammer1020

We implemented options to include other arrow types back in September 2023: https://www.autodesk.com/products/fusion-360/blog/september-2023-product-update-whats-new/#drawings
