Differance Between Generative Design and Topology Optimization

Hello Good Morning Everybody!

  • I am Masterthesis Student and working on the topic Generative Design relatively Topology Optimiozation. But I want to know about, What is the differance between Topology Optimization and Genrative Design  in terms of algorithm? Because in  Generative Design we also define functional Parameter like load, constraint, Boundary Condition same as a Topology Optimiztation and in Generative Design Generate Number of Solution???

...If I under this correctly... topology is a shape optimization tool that generates a new form based on the info you give the computer. You then have to manually remove the material and recreate your new shape, and then stress test the redesigned object. Generative design, designers input their objectives and constraints, and the software runs artificial intelligence-based algorithms in cloud to produce a wide range of design alternatives. You could have 1000s to choose from and move in and out and between the generative outputs. The computer does way more work, with machine learning and and I believe GD mimics nature a little better. Another option I am seeing is the use of dynamo with fusion and alias where you generate the algorithms to control the out much like creating a voronoi generator. there is a simple voronoi app you can download to use with fusion 360.. I'm not 100% sure if I am correct on all this but It is the way I am starting to understand. cheers

@I_Forge_KC had a really nicely written article about that. Hopefully he can chime in as I cannot locate this anymore.

I am traveling and don't have good typing abilities (mobile), so I'll get straight to the answer.

Autodesk topology optimization (Inventor, Fusion, Nastran) is a SIMP tool.
Autodesk Generative Design is a level-set tool.

The reason Generative is able to create so many solutions is because it solves for multiple materials simultaneously as well as constraints like overhang angle and build directions. Additionally, the level set algorithm allows us to seed the solver with a high number of topological holes and a high surface area. These seeds can be all kinds of different shapes and thus can yield both stochastic and directed solutions.

Thanks for the info, I’m trying to get all the info I can.. I’m really interested in building a car chassis using generative design. I mean how awesome would it be to build A crazy push rod suspension 32 Ford 3 window. And wheels that look like a Voronoi pattern 😉 if nothing else aleast show I understand how it works in portfolio... As an inspiring car designer.
