Design orientation

Hi,

I'm trying to change the orientation of a design, but didn't find yet how to

I created a design, but didn't notice that Y was UP 2017-09-10 12_16_34-Autodesk Fusion 360.png (I now changed it in the preferences to Z up2017-09-10 12_16_54-Autodesk Fusion 360.png )

So now my design has the wrong orientation, I'd like the design to stay as is, but redefine the Axis, is that possible ?

Sorry if this is a simple question, maybe I didn't use the right wording to search 😮

Hi,

If you changed the orientation from Y up to Z up before creating the model, the file will follow your changes as long as you restart Fusion after changing it from the preferences

I guess what you mean to say is that you created your project and then changed from Y up to Z up but the design didn't follow the changings, I mean inside of the design, it's still Y up, right?

I that was the case, it's because changing preferences only affects what you make after changing them, older files are not affected

Thanks SaeedHamza for the reply.

Yes I changed id afterwards and so it didn't affect the design I'm working on.

So now I'd like to rotate the whole design so as it reflects my preferences with the Z up, is that possible ?

Thanks

Yes, there is an easy way to do so

Create a new design which has the Z up, and then insert the design you're talking about into the new one and rotate it there

But in order for you to edit the sketches of your inserted design, you'll have to break the link by right clicking the inserted design from the browser

This is pretty simple and can be achieved with the controls exposed through the little pull down menu at the view cube.

I thought setting a new top won't affect the Up of the file since it's in the preferences ... good to know

Hi,

Thanks a lot for this post, simple indeed to change the orientation of the scene.

This thing now is that I also want the design to rotate; in your video, the hole in the cube is still aligned with the Z axis, and I's like it now to be aligned with the Y axis. Is that possible ?

Yes, you can always re-orient a component using the move tool or you can re-orien the body within the component also using the move tool.

Or if i's simps enough you can redefine the sketch plane.

Which of the ones apply to a given situation depends on the design. If you can share your design we can continue the discussion.

Personally, I wont worry about that stuff much. Aligning a design with any particular axis in 3D space is a pretty arbitrary choice and for the most part does not matter very much.

For CAM purposes I tend to have my default set to Z-Up, but I I do get that wrong then, as posted earlier, that's easy to change

Thanks for your explanation

Here is the link, I already followed the video to set the view, so Z up is now good and now as it is for 3D printing I'd like to lay this part flat, I tried the Move tool, but it hasn't been a success  yet 😮
