Debossing text into an STL Cylinder?

I am looking to print a few objects for my kids, who tend to fight over things not labeled. So I found an engineering Hearing Bone Thrust Bearing STL on Thingiverse and they love mine first print. So I thought I would learn have to add their names, but most all the tutorials I am finding are with single cylindrical faced objects. I am seeing when I import the STL as a mesh, many triangular facets.

If there is a tutorial (or even help with what search terms to try) for modifying an STL, that would be very helpful.

The object I am working with it this one:

"Andy's Gear" was the text I am trying to deboss by 1mm.

The easy way would be to make a 1mm thick cylinder to fit around the STL file and cut the text from that cylinder.  You can export both the cylinder and the STL as one STL file for printing.

The hard way uses third party software:  Openscad > CSG export > Freecad > Export as Step > Import into Fusion 360.

Interesting idea! I think the first idea would work best for this object, and might be the best for "name tagging" future objects for the kids. Rather than distort the original.

Thank you!
