Cutting a solid body with a mesh

Hello,

I am a complete newbie to Fusion 360.

I would like to use a mesh body to cut a shape out of a solid body. I'm not sure if this is possible, but if it is, I would love to know the best way to do it.

I attached images of the mesh I want to use, as well as an assembly of the mesh and a cylinder. I want to use the mesh to cut exactly that shape out of the inside of the cylinder.

If my explanation was not clear, let me know. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

I don't think you can use the mesh body directly.

A simple body can be copied with a trace sketch of the cross section, and Revolve Tool, then you can combine cut it from the solid cylinder.

You can probably cap off the open side of the mesh in the mesh workspace and then convert that closed water tight mesh into a BRep (solid body ) and then perform the combine-cut operation.

However, you'll end up with terrible geometry and such a model is a performance killer.

is there a reason you could not re-design the mesh object with the native tools in Fusion 360 ?

Your mesh geometry is planar faceted surfaces, not smooth curves.

Use it only as reference in creating a proper sketch curve and then Revolve-Cut.

Can you File>Export your *.f3d file to your local drive and then Attach it here to a Reply?

Hi @Anonymous,

Welcome to the fusion Community!

There is no direct way to split a Solid body with a mesh surface, but you can try this workflow as shown in the below video.

Hope this workaround helps you.

The mesh geometry in question is a thread and as such cannot be created by revolving a profile.
