Creation of Part classification/Family system

Hi,

       Has anyone created a part family classification system. such that with a few inputs I can pull up a

almost closely identical try to model/modify  in Fusion 360/Inventor.  There was a system created by GM years ago to model driveline shafts and other related parts, it was a coding system but it had limits.

I have not seen anything that can work with created geometry and describe the part  like latin taxonomy.

Has there been any studies in academia for part family naming system, I heard a company was calling itself the google of parts? mid year last year sometime  but no news about it lately

Addendum,

         The most powerful purpose CAD design can have is to reuse engineering over and over again.

to save time and money. The implementation of part family/classification system. is to capture old design and features and save hours of modeling and drawing time making different products somewhat similar. I found in industry -how many times did I want to model a part that looked  like something I have see before?  "Hey Joe  that manifold cover used in our swash-p pump design is what I want to use in my quick recip-actuator except resize it with smaller pockets". 

This part family system as devised from cad data- can work across systems. Not dependent from a pre-established design. ie   longer length part family The software extracts all identities and puts them in specific order for easy searching.

Sorry for the delay in reaching you. We don't have any inbuilt categorization to that level of complexity, and unsure of what exists out there. I just wanted to answer based on what I know. You may be able to achieve close to what you want depending on how you name/number your files and use the Derive operation.
