Creating multiple copies of a parametric component with different parameters

I have a component with a user parameter set to 31mm. What I want to do is have a single design with three copies of this component, with values for that parameter set to 26mm, 31mm, and 35mm.

Is there a way to import a component, and then modify the values of the component? Ie, import a parametric component.

By a parametric component, I mean a component that can be imported, and then the values that built it be changed. This is possible in OpenSCAD.

I keep thinking that I'm missing something with Fusion 360 and maybe I've been trying to pound a square peg in a round hole when in fact there are round pegs I should be using instead.

Is there a technique in F360 where you could have a derived component that is based on a particular combination of parameters but still linked back to a root component (i.e. a configuration)?

As an example, say you have a component for a metal drywall stud with a custom parameter for the length of the part.  It would be handy to be able to have an assembly that includes multiple instances of the stud component but with the length parameter set for each instance.  The next best alternative would be where you pre-define derived stud component files for each of the lengths needed for use in any assembly.  The key is that if you make a change to the original component file (that doesn't involve length), this needs to be "auto-magically" reflected in each of the length-specific derived component file as well as all assemblies they are used in.  Please note that I'm not actually doing anything with metal studs; this was just the first example that came to mind.

I've been a casual user of SolidWorks since 1997 but I'm in the process of moving all of our designs to F360 with the intent of making Fusion our standard for mechanical designs.  Some parts of the learning curve have been a challenge (especially joints) but overall I really enjoy working in F360 and some features are really nice.  For the most part I've been able to figure out the "Fusion" way of accomplishing things, but this one has me stumped.

Thanks!

Andy

You don't miss anything. Simply, you can't.

Fusion was one of the loud announcements by autodesk, the "killer app"  that was going to replace Inventor, they said. Maybe, actually, not. 🤔

As a user, you need to very carefully and thoroughly evaluate Fusion 360 before transitioning to it from more mature CAD packages.

Just to say that I've been using fusion for 2 days and I already find myself needing this feature.

It's a shame it doesn't exists, because it seems to be not so complicated to implement. "Just" have an access to parameters from a right click on an imported component for instance.

I had a Zoom conference with the responsible Program Manger from Autodesk on Monday.

I was somewhat aware that this is not a simple project, however, after we've talked I can definitely say that this is not trivial or easy whatsoever.

The vision on which I cannot further elaborate (As an EE I am under NDA) is indeed very exciting!

Disappointing indeed that this functionality does not appear to exist. If something has changed in the last two years since this discussion happened id love to know it though.

Have a look at „Configurations“ *

YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!!!!

Oh man this is EXACTLY what I needed. I'd needed this for so long. Didn't know it was there the whole time. Back in Inventor, there was a "make independent" option that was GOATED. Glad to see I can get pretty much the same functionality here. 🙂

Thanks^^
