Creating fill-in objects for emboss

Hello all,

I have successfully embosses text on a cylindrical object which I plan to 3D print. What I'd like to create now is what I would call in-fills for those letters so I can print those in a different color, thicker than the emboss itself, and stick/glue them in the embossed text. Think of a kid's letter puzzle where the letters come out and can be put back into their respective spots (see attached puzzle image.)

My question is, how can i create the letters that will also wrap around the cylinder, matching the emboss that's already in place, including the curvature of the cylinder? My only thought is to create a new cylinder object, apply the same letters as a deboss, then get rid of the cylinder and leave the letters as separate objects that I can print. I have to believe there's a better and/or proper way to do this.

If you go through the timeline of the attached model it should be clear. If not, please ask questions!
