creating assemblies with sheet metal parts

I'm in the process of designing some sheet metal parts and would like to put them together in an assembly.  I usually save parts as components when I'm doing this but I can't create a component from sheet metal.  What is the appropriate way to go about putting parts together. I've attached the parts I'm working with.

Thanks,

Roger

Sheet metal works only with components. Like in the solid workspace your root element is a component. If you don manually create a sheet metal component (Sheet metal -> Assemble -> Create Component) it will transform your root component into a sheet metal component if you create e.g. a flange.

So, just create an empty assemply design, save it, and insert your outer designs. After that you can treat those like any other component.

By looking at your examples, you shouldn't have multiple bodies in one component, because it will mess up your BOM. Same is true if you're using the mirror command if it's not truly a different part. But this are just side notes.

Sheet metal or not it is the same procedure.

I can't create a component from sheet metal, because it is one already.

Create empty file for the Assembly, use Insert to Current Design, for each component,

add Joints, keep remove linked filessmtest.PNG

I was able to convert my sheet metal bodies into components by making one new body around the sheet metal and hollowing that out like a mold. I created a second new body around the "mold" and used modify/cut to create a new body-- there was even a check bock to turn the final body into a new component. The excess pieces in the new component had to be removed, but I couldn't do a simple push/pull on the faces. I had to draw a new sketch and cut them away. You can also just turn off the visibility on the unwanted bodies.
