Creating a world map for routing / importing big SVG file

Hey there!

I'm pretty fresh to Fusion 360, love the tool and the support so far. I'm working on a project and would like to ask for some advice.

I want to route a World Map out of plastic. The end result should be simple, there should only be three levels:

  • land/countries (not routed)
  • country/state borders (gap with 2mm depth/radius)
  • oceans (3-5mm deep)

The only way I found to import map data was SVG. I was able to import small countrys that way but with bigger datasets such aus all countrys of europe Fusion 360 freezes indefinitely. How can I tackle my world map idea the right way in fusion 360 (or another tool)?

Best, Thomas

Hi thomas
You can make a model out of the sketches, our put some countries on different sketches, then you can select the toolpath.

Hi Thomas, You found the right tool - I think loading SVG is the most convenient way to create a map in Fusion. Please try the following steps and then Fusion 360 should not freeze:

1. Create new sketch and keep the sketch active (not closing the palette);

2. Right click the sketch node from browser and "hide profie";

3. Insert your SVG map.

With these steps, I can load a map of USA into Fusion within a couple of seconds. But, if there are too many objects in the map, it will be still slow to edit them after importing. So if your map is complicated, you may want to separate it into some small pieces and import each into a different sketch.

Hello, thanks for the help.

Thanks for reassuring me that this is the right aproach. Sadly I did not have access to a better graphics card yet (normaly don't need one).

Will give an update later.

Best, Thomas
