Creating a lip (varied thickness) on a curved surface

Hi Everyone,

 

I'm creating a prototype boat and I've managed to make the shape of the hull. It's currently a certain thickness but I'd like to make the hull wider at the top so there's a larger lip to support the deck. 

 

Looking from the back, I've created a side profile that I would normally sweep around, but because the hull surface curves in different directions this didn't work. I've therefore tried to use the loft feature, but the loft protrudes the surface of the hull.

The closest I have so far is rather than lofting a solid, I lofted an inner surface, but then I'm not sure how to join the surface and the hull wall (solid) to create a filled solid object. I did attempt to create some patches on the top, but for some reason they would not appear and I'm still not sure how to convert my surfaces to a solid that joins the hull.

My question would be, is the loft the right approach here?

If so, should a solid loft work or is the surface loft the right solution?

 

I've also attached my file if that's of help. The bodies in question are left taper (loft17) and left loft (loft16).

The sketches used to produce them are underside deck, bottom of side curves, side ribs and inner back.

Use whatever works.  I am pressed for time at the moment, back later.

I cut the bump off.

 

Create a zero surface offset on the hull.  Use it to be the cutter for split body and cut the bump off.

You are working too hard.  Your first Loft has gone yellow, and it it were me, I would build half the boat and mirror as late as possible.

 

The Loft taper surface if built the right size / shape, is all you need to make that reinforcing rail.  With that surface and the rest of the hull, that rail can be made with Boundary Fill.  The Surface has to overlap the hull / deck appropriately and the Boundary fill will solidify the void.

 

Fix the yellow Icons, as they happen.  Fully constrained sketches are recommended.

Thanks @davebYYPCU  that's been really helpful. I've fixed the yellow icons and I've redone the lofted surface so all the planes with the profile and rails intersect. However when I try to do the boundary fill between the surface and the solid (hull) I couldn't get the boundary fill to work. I then created the outer surface of the hull using zero surface offset and tried to fill all the surfaces instead but that didn't work either. Whenever I click 'select cells' from boundary fill the screen goes blank. Any ideas please?

Mate what happened to the new file, it is sooo slow I couldn't work in it.

 

I went back to the earlier file, and with more construction, the solid loft and the boundary fill work equally well.

You cant short cut, complicated loft curves like the bow section of the boat.  

The inside surface body and the cut outer surface, and the 4 planes, made the boundary fill, 

I had some overlapping at the bow I didn't like, so added the 4th sketch and the inside rail, to fix that up, and then the solid loft behaved as well.

So I managed to solve the slow down by deleting lots of the unused elements. I'm not sure what exactly was going on! Thanks for sending over your design. After looking at it carefully and trying a few things  I've managed to do a complete solid loft.
