Create Pattern from a Combine Cut Operation

If I have Component A and Component B partially overlapping, and use the Combine feature, I can cut the portion of Component B that is overlapping with Component A away, leaving a cutout area in Component A. I would like to create a pattern of this cut so I have multiple instances of this cutout along Component A, but when I try to do this by choosing body or component, it does not work. I have to choose all the newly made faces of the cutout area. Am I doing something wrong or is this the only way to complete this operation? I know I could make copies of Component B and do the pattern first and then use combine to take all the instances of B away from A, but this creates a bunch of extra instances that clutter up my browser so I'm trying to avoid this.

Thanks!

Here is a very simple example. I have applied a pattern along a path based on the cutout as a feature. It shows the instances of the cutout in the preview but once I hit OK, nothing happens.

Note that in the actual file I'm working with, my cutout shape is more complex. Obviously if it were just a cube shape like this, I would just do a extrude cut rather than a combine operation.

Thank you.

Hi,

1. You do not select the faces but the Combine feature in the timeline.

2. select the compute type ‘Optimized’
3. why do you not use the rectangular pattern here?
4. what additional purpose does combining fulfil?

Thank you. I tried adjust and identical, but forgot to try optomized. I started by using the rectangular pattern, but I figured since I only need one row of copies, the pattern on path might make more sense. But I'd be happy using either option.

The reason I am using the combine feature is because I have a slightly more complex component and I wanted to partially cut out that component from another to make an indentation. I have attached an image.

Thank you for your assistance.

Hi,

The sweep tool with the ‘Solid Sweep’ option is ideal for your purpose.

You can use it to create customised segments for tools.
In the screencast, I show an example where the cut covers the entire tool height.
