Create a rounded body

I want this elipse to be a 3D shape with a rounded body. I've been trying to get what I want to using the Loft feature but am finding it fiddly.

Is the the correct way for me to be going about this?

If I'm understanding what you want correctly, I would delete your half of the sketch that is mirrored with the symmetry constraints and revolve those arcs along a curve in a perpendicular plane.

That would give me a round body, what I'd like is an eliptical curve though.  A round one is too prominent.
