Create A Hole Through A Sphere

To create a hole in a solid body, I am working from this tutorial: http://help.autodesk.com/view/fusion360/ENU/?guid=GUID-0DFCBD4F-5130-4CC9-B1A7-23C88147752A

  1. I create a sphere with its center at the origin
  2. I begin the process of creating a hole per the instructions, but the instructions seem to presume that the object has a flat face and I am guessing that the hole will be perpendicular to the face.
  3. What steps would I take to place a hole through the center of the sphere. Is there any tutorial out there that I may have missed in my search?
  4. Should I just create a sketch plane and extrude a circle from that sketch?
  5. If this is simply a limitations of the Create Hole Tool, are there other limitations that I should be aware of?

Hole will work on a spherical surface - just pick a point on the sphere where you want the hole.  See the screencast below.  However, if you want a bit more control on the placement, then yes, I would recommend creating a sketch on one of the origin planes, or on a plane outside of your sphere.  You can dimension a sketch point or a circle from the origin, if you don't want it centered on the origin.  You can use Hole (with the "from Sketch" option selected) to select a sketch point as the hole origin, or you can use Extrude if all you want is a cylinder (no threads, no drill point geometry)

@jeff_strater

  1. As a trial run I created a 1" cube by extruding a 1" Square sketch.
  2. I then created a countersunk hole with the Extent parameter set to All.
  3. Next I created a solid body sphere 1" in diameter.
  4. I tried to create the same hole in the sphere that I had created in the cube by using the same hole parameters, and I received the error message.
  5. Your method of using a dimension and pulling it through the sphere worked for me, but when I choose "All" as the extents, it creates errors.
  6. I can use your method when doing a sphere, but I am puzzled by the error message.

Thanks @Inspections_JCH.  Your screencast still did not come through, but never mind, your explanation was sufficient.  Yes, you have found a bug.  Through All does not work for a solid sphere.  Very strange.  It works for a cylinder, and as you mentioned, a block.  Something about that sphere geometry is making this option fail.  I'll file that bug, thanks for the clear explanation.
