copy paste, or duplicate sketch?

l have a sketch that I'd like to duplicate and modify one copy for for a cuttout pattern and another for a deboss pattern:

How do I duplicate the sketch? I've tried cut/paste the sketch itself, selecting the sketch objects from within the sketch, activating a new sketch, and pasting (nothing pastes), and there doesn't seem to be anythign in the timeline that would help.

Thanks!

Ok, I got around the duplicate/modify problem by creating two files.

Still, it seems like I should be able to select elements from one sketch and paste them into another?  I've searched but have not found an answer.

thanks,

Hello,

You can copy geometry of sketch to new sketch.

Lets try this: open your sketch select all and using right click menu select copy.

close your sketch and create new sketch

using right click menu select paste.

geometry is at the same position as the original.

one tip: one sketch can be used multiple times, for extrude- join, cut,... revolve. (the geometry is same for all features)

regards

Martin

Hi Martin,

Thanks for the help! I expected Fusion 360 to work as you describe. However,

"open your sketch select all and using right click menu select copy"

There is no copy option in the contextual menu.  Cmd-C also has no effect.

"close your sketch and create new sketch

using right click menu select paste."

If I continue and create a new sketch, there is also no paste option (right click) and Cmd-v has no effect.

What could I be doing wrong?

Thanks!

that's really weird. Just important point is, that select and copy must be done while in edit sketch. Here is the screen shot.

I'll prepare a video in next post to show my work flow

Do you mind to share your design, I would download it and try directly with your design

Hi Martin,

ok, this *is* really wierd.  I watched your screencast (thanks!) and went to make my own screencast to show you the problem, but now the options are there as you describe (and I would expect).

Also, I can select a sketch in the browser, right-click, select "copy", then select the "sketches" browser item, and then right-click-paste and I create a copy of the complete sketch, that I can then move.  This is also what I would expect.

Is there a setting somewhere that I could have accidentally tweaked to make the copy/paste options unavailable?  I admit I feel like I am randomly clicking around sometimes 😉 Although there have been other forum posts that describe these sorts of Ghosts in the Fusion 360 Machine (Ron's "Fusion 360 demands inappropriate attention" comes to mind).

Sorry for the bother. Am I hallucinating?  Maybe I need more coffee.

Hello Jamie,

I'm not aware of any way how to enable/disable copy/paste in sketch. In my experience, some commands are visible only in specific situations (inside sketch,...) that's something that we have to learn. But it can be also a defect... Don't worry, no more coffee is necessary. 🙂 Just send us a post and we will try to help you.

I'm looking forward

Martin

ok, I am having the same problem where I cannot duplicate a sketch. The "copy" and "paste" commands are not behaving as described.  Sometimes I see them, but they are not responding in a way that make sense to me.  They are not consistent with the behavior Martin described.

I captured the problem in a screencast:

http://autode.sk/1B61PM9

Here's the downloadable file:

http://a360.co/1Hp9eOd

I simply want to duplicate a sketch so I can make changes to it within the same file, rather than creating new files for each variation I create.

thanks,

jamie

Hey Jamie,

Sorry to hear the trouble you're having.  I made a screen cast a little while ago about some similar buggy behavior someone else is having:

https://screencast.autodesk.com/main/details/0b506aa5-e622-40d4-b585-67957c455878

It was apparently arising by the autoprojecting that occurs when defining a sketch on a face.  In your case I had to manually select the individual line and arc segments, holding shift down, to then copy taht and paste into a new sketch.  It's a little time consuming but in the end it's all about getting it done, right?

Thanks. The screencast was informative, but I am not sure my problem is the same.  Often the "copy" and "paste" commands do not appear in the contextual menu.

As with many aspects of Fusion 360, you have to try it many times before one time it randomly works. Very frustrating for beginners.
