Converting mesh (.stl) to solid models

Any meshing experts out there who would be willing to spend 30 minutes remotely walking me through some meshing questions? I am looking to convert a .stl file to a solid model to make changes to the model for machining. However, everything I try seems to always create multiple faceted faces and makes it difficult to chain. Appreciate anyone who can take the time to help. I can't attach a file either since I don't have permission to share it.
