Convert solid to mesh?

Hi all,

I've come from Sketchup, and through the wonderful help of this community have remade my model from scratch as a solid in Fusion 360 *much* quicker than I thought possible.

I now need to export my model back to Sketchup just as a sanity check to see close it is to the original. Firstly I need to convert the model (it's a single body) to a mesh, and then export out.

How do I convert to a mesh? Even if it's a low(ish) poly, it's better than nothing.

Thanks in advance,

Peter

NB: In previous attempts I've been able to import the original mesh from SketchUp into Fusion 360 in the same scene as my solid model, but I have had a lot of trouble scaling either of the two models to the same size and positioning them over each other to check for clearances/tolerances.  That is why I'm now trying it the other way.  It amazes me that there isn't a 'scale' function - or am I missing something?

He. Just read another post that was just answered and got a clue on how to do it there.

  1. In the settings cog in the bottom right of the screen, Turn "history" off. (Why?)
  2. This adds a new workspace called "Mesh" to the workspaces dropdown
  3. Go to preferences > preview and enabled "Mesh" (it's a beta feature)
  4. Once in the mesh workspace there is an option for "BRep to mesh" under "CREATE"

Hey presto 🙂

Depending on what that solid is, this will never work.

There are number of technical/mathematical reasons for it.

A T-Spline can be converted into a solid because it can be converted into a set of untrimmed NURBS patches.

However, most solid bodies consist of trimmed NURBS surfaces with non-quad shapes.

Except it literally just worked for me, guess 2021 really is a new year.

You don't really need to turn off the history to convert a mesh into a BRep.

After you import a mesh, create a base feature, then select the mesh, right-click and convert it to a BRep.

Then finish the base faeature.
