Components and Timeline?
The quick answer is you should create the component first with it activated design your part. What you could try if you've forgotten Rule #1 is don't use Create components from bodies, just create an empty component then select the first sketch and drag it in the empty component, if you're lucky all the other sketches and features will end up in the component as well, sometime you need to drag the other sketches though.
If you can undo what was in the screencast give it a try.

What did I do wrong? No, I did not click "Don't capture design history"
The reason the timeline's empty when you activate the new component is because all the features and sketches are still in the main component, create components from bodies doesn't move the features with the body.

Gotcha, that makes sense.
I've seen mentions of R.U.L.E #1, but didn't actually know what it was. I spend most of my time over on the CAM side
