component update slow (any ideas?)

Over the past weeks have the general impression that F360 cloud services have become much snappier, for example basic document saves or operations in the data panel.

However in my experience is component updates are problematic.

At best they may take 30 seconds but frequently I have to wander off for 5-10 minutes.

At home and at workshop there are "good" internet connections, but I find some location dependence: it's much worse at home than at the workshop, though not great at either.

For information I'm in Brussels, Belgium, Europe.

Is it a server location / routing issue?

Is the server busy?

Are these files much bigger than one might imagine? (Happens also with "small"components!)

Is the update procedure highly complex and chatty? (Request, download partway, checksum, request again, download a bit more... etc.)

Does anyone have any experience of this or suggestions?

At the other end I wonder if the the F360 team have statistics on how long various cloud operations are taking users (from initial request to operation termination) which might flag up problem-typess, or issues by geographical region?

Hi @maker9876,

Hmm, 5-10 minutes is definitely a long wait for components to update. There could be one of several things going on. Do you have an example file that you are comfortable uploading that I could take a look at?

If not, have you tried updating the components in offline mode? If this works pretty well when online mode does not, then it may be related to your internet connection. If there's not much improvement between online and offline mode it may be an issue with either the hardware or the files themselves. Would you mind giving me some information about the machine(s) you're using, and whether you're using the same computer at home as in the workshop? As for the files, about how many components do you have, and are many of them large or complex components?

Best,

Here's an example file:

I've also seen the problem with simpler files including fewer components.

Didn't know updating was possible in offline mode. Had the impression that F360 carries with it a very limited store of documents for offline usage, though perhaps it at least has the most recent ones. Will try that.

Great, thanks for the file! I'll take a look and see what I can find out.

Hi @maker9876,

How did updating the components in offline mode work for you?

I checked out your file and I wasn't able to replicate the problem on my computer. On my end both the online mode and the offline mode updated the components in about 5-10 seconds. Can you give me information about the system you're running Fusion on? Also, would you be able to give me any details about your internet connection (provider, type, speed, etc)?

There are a few things you can try in the meantime. It may help to optimize your settings in Fusion; sometimes that fixes lag issues. Another potential fix may be to make sure the component is computing correctly (in component file Modify > Compute All, then save).

Thanks for the helpful feedback and pleased to know the file is OK.

Indeed working in offline mode seems to make updates very fast so presumably somehow network related.

I use a 2015 Macbook Pro Retina at both locations and the internet connection is supposed to be "good" 30Mbps (DSL Telenet.be ) home and 100Mbps work (fibre - not sure who is the provider).

Didn't know about the "compute all" feature and it's quite handy! Have no firm evidence but a vague feeling it might even help the updating.

Regarding optimising, hadn't noticed the option for HR graphics and have now selected it since my MB Pro seems to have no problem with the graphics processing!

Returning to original question, would have thought it would be quite interesting to have statistics of user operation durations measured from the server-side: time operation starts and time operation ends. In case there are odd things going on in certain non-US locations that would be very hard to spot otherwise.

It's just that, if this is a simple network problem then it seems odd that, for example, component saving (to cloud) should be very rapid in the same period that component update (from cloud) is very long?

Also sometimes the F360 forum can be very very slow, even when the rest of the internet is fast. 😉

Hi @maker9876,

I'm glad to hear it works in offline mode at least. As a workaround you can continue working in offline mode to keep the component updates quick and just toggle over to online mode when you need to.

Sometimes firewalls or antivirus programs affect how Fusion connects to the network; have you tried running Fusion with all of that disabled (if you are able)? Or are there any other networks you can try connecting to? Theoretically your internet connections should be good, especially at work, so the problem may be some other program monitoring your connection or saves.
