Coil around a ring

I'm sure this has been addressed previously but i cant find an answer.  I've done tutorials that created augers and used coils and spirals to wrap around a path, but i am having a really hard time trying to wrap a coil around a ring.  Think, like a rope around a ring.

 

I've sort of emulated it with a spline debossed and then circular pattern, but that is just on the top surface and i'd like to do it correctly.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Ok. So trying to follow the file...

It looks like the secret sauce is the twist angle on the surface sweep, which creates the helix?

 

Then you are creating a plane on the path?  Then on that plane youre creating the diameter of the "rope" (coil) and sweeping it along the surface path?
