Change Default Units to IN When Importing DXF

Hey all,

Ive searched and found a couple message chains regarding changing the default units in the system. I have followed these but they dont seem to help when importing a DXF file.

My workflow:

*Design/Model in SW

*Flatten and Save As a DXF in SW

*Import DXF into F360

*Open Recently Uploaded DXF

*In UL of Graphics Window, Select "Document Settings, Units, Edit"

*Change Units from MM to Inches

These last two steps are annoying and a few extra clicks. Funny that we complain about a few mouse clicks these days...I get it. BUT, if there was a way to change this so that the DXF would automatically import with IN as the units, that would great!.

Any input is appreciated!

Thanks!

I would first change the units in SW before the initial export

What units are you using in SolidWorks?

What are your default units in Fusion?

Are you doing Insert of the dxf into Fusion or are you doing Open of the dxf in Fusion?

Can you Attach an example dxf file here (make a simple dummy file in SolidWorks if your data is proprietary).

Changing units should not be necessary.

My Solidworks is always set to IPS, not MM. I have checked default units in 360, using a thread on here that I found but am wondering if there is another place to do this that would apply to DXF files or importing of files.

As for uploading, I create a new file in my customers Project window (left pane), once in a new blank file I simply click the "Upload" button in the upper right corner of the left hand pane. That brings up another window and I browse for the file then select "Upload".

This often times takes forever in itself. I always thought DXF files were small in size but this upload method is usually very slow...like minutes, even for simple parts. I am not sure what F360 does with the file as far as analyzing but it definitely takes longer than one would expect.

Sample DXF attached.

Can you use Insert DXF instead? Just start a new document in inches then insert DXF will import in whatever units the DXF was saved in. Edit this will have the added benefit of less time to import.

HughesTooling,
This worked great! I'll retrain myself to use this as the normal process. I appreciate the input.

One thing to note, when importing I did get a warning flash up in the lower right of my screen mentioning something about the file not having units attached to it and that the default units would be used. In this case, since I had previously set units to IN in F360, it defaulted to inches as I wanted it to.
Only mentioning this in case there is something else that can be done to attach units to a DXF file when saving them.

Thanks everyone for the help!

That sounds like a SolidWorks issue.

Can you Attach example *.sldprt file here?

What do you have your export options set to?

Early versions of AutoCAD were unitless.

You will want to make sure that you set to 2018 in SolidWorks.

Was that with the sample DXF you attached above. It seems to have the units set and I didn't get any warning when I imported it.

Another program I use gives this when I open the DXF.
