Cannot Import .STP file with Mac OS

Yesterday, I attempted to import a .stp file into my fusion 360 workspace, but the file would not be recognized.

Should I be converting a file to another format? Does Fusion 360 allow importing of .STP files or is there special instructions for the MAC OS?

I recevied the .STP file via email, saved it to my Desktop, but when attempting to import I am having no success.

Fusion will only import surfaces, if the file is just curves or a mesh it will not import. Did you use the data panel to upload or did you use New Design From File on the file menu?

Hi you might want to take a look at the stp file you received by using a trial version of this 3D CAD Viewer. I have the paid version and it is very good. It works on stl, stp and many others.

I hope the trial version will work. This could be one of the best viewer available from the Mac App store. It also give your the property of the file.

Or just as Mark suggested, use NEW Design from file to read the stp from your local disk. if working then save to the cloud in f3d format.

If you upload the STEP file through the upload commnad in the A360 project (web browser), the A360 viewer may let you take a look at the file. I wrote a tip (which is a bit old at this point) highlighting the differences between uploading/exporting data from Fusion 360 and the A360 we browser.

If you upload the STP file to A360 via the web browser, does the online viewer generate any geometry? Do other applications import the STP file? If you can share the file here. I'm happy to take a closer look.

Yes, I've attempted to upload using both options, the result is always the same; I get the message "Processing incomplete".

Is there something with the file format?

It sounds as though the STP file is either corrupt or is hitting an unexpected problem during translation. Are you able to share the STP file? If you're able to share it but you'd rather not post it to the forum, you can email it to jake.fowler (at) autodesk.com and we'll look into it.

Hi, that is the reason why I suggested you to try opening the stp file with a different Viewer. If you can open that file with the viewer then it means something else. If you cannot open that file using the viewer, then you should ask the sending party to send that to you again.

Actually in the STP files exported from Fusion360 is the most updated versions. I noticed that some older 3D programs that can import STP files could not see this latest updated STP format. After the other users updated their programs (usually they have to pay for the latest update. Most older business people simple do not care about updating until it is needed.) they could open my stp files.

I suspected that your stp file might be made with very very old out of date program. A 3D CAD viewer might be able to open it. Please test it! Maybe Fusion 360 could not open it due to that.

That is my real experience.

Do you know what is in the file, is it a 3d surface model. Unless the update today changed what Fusion can import from a STP file it will not import curves or wire fame info. Can you attached a sample file, I have a few programs that will open STP files so I might be able to figure out what's wrong.

Thanks everyone for your help. I was able to resolve the issue. Using the upload feature with the Fusion 360 workspace allowed me to successfully upload the file.
