Cannot display canvas in linked component

Is there a reason why I can't display a canvas in a linked component? I would like to use it as reference within the assembly context to edit a component in place.

You can display the Canvas in a Linked Component, in the assembly, but you must open the linked component, make it visible, and save the component in that state then update the assembly.  That is just the rule for the visibility of canvases in linked components.
