Can't select form surface

I created a 3d form. I am trying to project a sketch to the surface.

My first step was to set an offset plane. But it won't let me select a surface of the body.

Offset Plane requires a plane to be selected, either a planar face, work plane, or sketch region.  Most likely, your 3D form does not have any planar faces, it's hard to say for sure without seeing at least a picture.

I just experienced this, as a beginner...

If this involves offsetting a plane from another component then make sure that only the lamp for the 'body' of the original component is off and not lamp for the complete component.
