Can't group components

The ability to move one or several components into another to group them together seems to have stopped and I can't figure out why. It was working fine and then it wasn't. I can copy and past them into another component, but then I have two copies of the original components. Is there something I'm missing?

Hi @wafflelad,

I just tried on my computer and I still seem to have that functionality. I am assuming you are referring to dragging a component into another component to make that one a sub-component. All I did, was click and drag the component into an existing component folder and it seemed to work okay. If you could provide a screencast or screen caputre that would be great so I could see what you are trying. Also, not sure if you are referring to a selection set or not?

Thanks,

Yeah, that's what I'm referring to. I had included a screencast, but it didn't get posted for some reason.

It's here...

Hi @wafflelad,

Hmm, my initial thought was that those components were instances of each other, but from your screencast it does not appear so. If those components are dependent on each other, that may be what is causing the issue. If you right click the component, do you have an option for Make Indpendent. If so, try that and it should work.  Off the top of my head, besides that I do not see what is causing the issue, besides the fact that those parts may be related. If that doesn't do the trick, I will probably have to take a peek at the file so I can troubleshoot with it directly.

Thanks,

Yeah, I don't have the make independent option. The components I'm trying to add to the "Head Inside" component originated as part of that body and were separated via cuts. That's their only link that I can think of. I wouldn't think that would do it, though. I can't add them to another component, either. I will send you a link to the file.

Make Independent is only available in direct edit mode, it looks like @wafflelad has history enabled so I don't think there's an equivalent to Make Independent. Also don't know of an easy way to find out if a component is an instance with history enabled, well apart from editing one component to see if it effects the others.

Hi @wafflelad,

@HughesTooling - great catch! Thanks for the backup.

@wafflelad - I've got good news and bad news for you. The good news is that I can successfully move the components that you tried to move into the component folder that you were trying for. It gave me no issue at all. Now the bad news is, I am unsure what could be causing this. Do you think we can set something up offline so that way I can see your system first hand and see what may be causing this error?

Thanks,

Thanks for chiming in, @HughesTooling. I'm starting to think it might be better to run with the history off. I keep running into instances where it limits you and I almost never go backwards in it.

Ok, so I should have thought of this before. I tried to do it on my other computer and it worked. So, I went and reinstalled Fusion 360 on the computer that was giving me trouble. It works now. Something must have been messed up in the app.

Thanks!

Simply turning off History solved this for me. If you aren't using history, try disabling it before reinstalling.

I found that playing through the history fixes this issue as well, if you're like me and like having history on. Yesterday, I had this issue on one computer but not the other with the same model. Today both machines were affected, but playing through the history fixed it.

One thing that will stop you from moving components and bodies in the timeline\browser is if you have the timeline rolled back. Try activating the top level component then make sure the timeline marker is at the end.

Agreed. Occasionally design history gets messed up. I found disabling the design history timeline often fixes some of the weirdness. I don't use it a lot anyway. so I usually just run with no history.

Just got the same problem, and it was an history blocage.

Here is how was my history causing the problem.

Moving history cursor solved the problem, and I've been able to move components in a new one.

Yes. This worked. What I did specifically was to delete all history after my last good timeline. Once all the little grey'd out icons where deleted I could group/nest components again.
