Can't edit component sketches any longer - turned into a Base Feature?

Not sure what happened, or what I've done wrong here... but I'm trying to do the right thing here by having new components for my different parts, and this issue always seems to crop up.

I'm modelling a new coffee table and have started each new piece as Component. Everything was working well and then all of the sudden, I can't edit the sketches in my components any longer.

I noticed that when I activate a Component, I see a 'Base Feature' item in the history, and when I edit that, I can see the history on my Browser, but not in the timeline...

Why did Fusion360 do this?

Hi,

probably the history has been switched off in the meantime or you have created the sketch in a base feature.

1.

edit basefeature.png

2. Browser > Sketch > rightclick > Edit sketch

If this design had history turned on at one time, but now does not, there are really only two ways that this can happen:

history has been turned off for the entire design:

or, features in the timeline have been converted to Direct Modeling (DM) features:

Hi @g-andresen & @jeff_strater - thanks for the quick responses.

I did at one point turn off the Design History because I wanted to move a Component lower in the Browser Window, but it wasn't letting me. But I have the Design History turned on, and it now has these Base features.

Is there any way to turn back to how it was?

When I edit a Base Feature, I can edit the Sketch, but I can't edit previous features, like Extudes.

If there's a article or video from AutoDesk that talks about this, I'll happily read/watch that to get a better understanding.

Thanks for the help!

Go to your data panel, find the older version that existed before you deleted the timeline,

promote that version to become the current open version.

If tempted to cancel the timeline, you can not undo that operation, as it says in the warning.

Might help....

Thanks all and @davebYYPCU - I decided to start over given it's not an overly complex model

Hi,

This is because after switching off the history, the extrusion is not automatically updated after changing the sketch, but the extrusion must be made again with the changed sketch.

yes, turning off history is destructive - turning it back on just creates those base features, and does not establish any sort of parametric associativity.
