Can't change apperance

When I'm trying to apply the appearance to the object, it just pops up an error message as I can change the appearance of other objects, it's quite weird, please help me out.

You're getting this error because the components are referenced. You can either right-click > open the components in the browser and change the appearance in the referenced design, or you can right-click on them in the browser and break the link, then apply the appearance in this design.
