can someone suggest a better strategy?

I'd like to create a handle like the one at the end of the series of images below.

It's form really is well described by sweeping a profile such as that below left along a path such as that below right.

However (I've come up against this before) there's a fundamental problem in Fusion that if you sweep a profile along - and perpendicular to - a path if in consequence that profile crosses over itself in certain ways then the sweep will fail.

So, to test the idea a bit, I swept the end tip of the profile along the path (a small enough section that it won't cross over itself) and indeed the effect is exactly as desired. Then, in order to complete the form, performed a Revolve on the central part of the profile (plus a bit more!).

The result is just the kind of thing I'm looking for, but of course not at all finished.

Can anyone suggest a better strategy for achieving this same effect?

(By prioritising the horizontal sweep we are making nice curves for fingers to slip in and out of... The handle will be used horizontally, the hand of the user resting on top.)

Hi @maker9876,

Is there a reason the profile must be swept at all?

If you're okay with revolving the center, you could just revolve the entire profile and get a nice concave face in the center. Then you could extrude (intersect) the profile you're currently sweeping along (intersecting the profile you just revolved). Then you'd add fillets along intersected profile edges to get the nice soft edges you currently have.

Let me know if this helps.

Best,

Ben

Thanks @ben.lorimore

Have just tried as you suggested with the results below.

It's nice but there's something a little bit vanilla about filleting.

However this gives a new basis for experimentation. Two heads always better than one!

Understandable, you could always sweep cut your desired curve instead of fillet!

Ben

Maybe try using sculpt environment.  I am no expert there but you can get nice shapes and using symmetry it is fast.

just a thought

@TMC.Engineering that looks really promising.

I'm really a total beginner in sculpt but you are showing the way. Am now going to give it a go.

Thanks a lot.

8-fold symmetry. Wow!

Hi @TMC.Engineering

Could you please mention the steps you went through to create this shape, I wanna make sure of something if possible

Regards

Here is a little video and the model.  i did not worry about constraining the sketch because it is not associated to the tspline body.

I have used splines and lines, both work ok for me.  there could be a better way.

NIce.

Works like a dream and offers plenty of a control.

I think we can call that a Solution! 😉
