Can not unfold these particular pieces, not sure why

Hey all

I have created these to pieces, they are fairly basic. I sketched out a flat plain for each and converted it to sheet metal and added a few simple bends to achieve the overall shape. However now that i am finished and need to prep them for laser cutting, when i go to unfold them it wont enable me to select any stationary faces for it to reference from.

Any thoughts ?

The problem is scaling the part changes the thickness so it fails. Using scale to change the size in a parametric modeller like Fusion is a bit of a bodge, you should edit your sketches to the correct size not use scale. Looking at your workflow you are not using good technique.

Like here using offset face to resize the part, why not just draw a rectangle the correct size that would be easy to edit to the correct size? Also seems like you've exported from another design, is that just to share the part here?

Here's something else. Have you figured out you can edit or delete features from the timeline?

Here you've deleted 2 fillets from the model rather than just delete the features from the timeline. Your timeline ends up with about 3 or 4 times more features than are needed because you just add more features rather than edit the ones you have.

Thanks Mark

I appreciate the feedback, being a self taught fusion user I'm not surprised that my workflow is garbage to be honest. I'm just a mechanic trying to get a few custom parts out. I have a Maya background so its all pretty loose over in that camp. I essentially created a base shape and started trimming it back to achieve the desired result.

I removed the scale that I did and it unfolded immediately.

Really appreciate you putting in the time to help me out with this. As I said I'm no quantum physicist

I did know you could delete features from the time line, however I didn't know that was an acceptable way of working. The time line seems to get quite convoluted as the project unfolds. But like you said it could be congested based on my current way of doing things.

Hi,

In the screencast I show an appropriate workflow.

You should try and keep things as simple as possible, minimum curves in sketches and minimum features in the timeline. I guess sometimes deleting a feature might break downstream features, then you need to decide if it's worth breaking features then fixing the error to keep it simple.

One thing you are doing right is adding fillets to the body rather than to sketches. It's a lot easier to fully constrain a sketch with sharp corners than one with fillets. You should really aim to fully constrain sketches with dimensions and constrains, then if you want to resize the part, just edit the sketch's dimensions.
