BOM Strategy

I have a design that consists of a large number of parts, where many are groups of duplicate parts (something like a construction project where the raw materials consist of beams, bricks, tiles, board, ...).

Ideally, I want to be able to output a count of each of the different types of parts.

I've noted that tables in drawings can be output as CSV files, but that the tables are only populated by components. If I've got this right, does it mean that to get to my desired output is to convert each of my parts to individual components?

I'm hoping that there's a better way that I just don't know about yet.

If those parts are not components, what are they ?

Can you share a screenshot of your design including the browser tree ?

Yes it does. Everything should be components. There are few situations where you would want bodies over components, but 9 out of 10 times you want them to be components. All you need to do to make bodies into components is under the "assemble" tab, select "new component" and switch to "from bodies". If you want them to show up on a BOM then they need to be components. Rule #1 would be something good to read. Of course not to take credit from @TrippyLighting since he is the one that wrote it. If anyone knows what they are talking about its him.

Sorry to be slow responding. I’m away from my computer at the moment so I can’t share the data you’ve requested, but I’ll try and explain:

I am new with Fusion 360 (and I’m sure it shows), but I think the likely issue is that this app is engineering centric whereas I am currently using it to construct a framework to support a deck (a more architectural use).

The individual parts are multiples of the same simple body, e.g. rectangular rafters 125 x 50 x 1500mm, as opposed to a compound component comprised of primitive bodies.

What I’m missing (misunderstanding, overlooking) is a way to group all components of the same type when listing the quantities in the design. When I convert my bodies to components, I just end up with a long list at the top level of the browser tree and this is reflected in the table. I want to group components of the same type from the design so that the table shows, using my example, ‘Rafter 125 x 59 x 1500’, 50.

I am sure there’s a simple solution.

Hi,

you´re right.

BOM considers only top level components.

If you already have the components made and are wanting to combine them, then select all the components you would like to have moved to one parent component and click and drag them to the desired parent component. Hopefully this Screencast will help.

Thanks. I think a combination of this and looking at the Rule #1 video explains what I wasn't getting.

I'll mark this as answered for now and ask a new question if I need to.
