Bodies linked to one another?? (New user here)

Hello everyone!!

I'm relatively new to fusion (only 1 month) but have been using sketchup for over 10 years, so please forgive my ignorance. Not sure if i'm wording this right? How do you de-link bodies from sketches or from other bodies? I'm struggling to find an answer on google or youtube?? When I modify or delete certain geometry within different components it modifies or deletes other components and/or their geometry as well. Even deleting a component will sometimes delete 4 other components. Some bodies which is copied/mirrored to separate components are either linked or not linked when editing the geometry. Can someone please point me in the right direction because it's driving me nuts...haha.

Attached screenshot shows my mess. I got all these errors after modifying one small piece of geometry (one of the legs)

Thanks,

Llywellyn

Hi,

Please share the file Describe the actions that you believe have led to this addition and your desired goal..

File > export > save as f3d on local drive  > attach to post.

Try "Remove" as opposed to "Delete". Delete removes the history from the part, remove "removes" the geometry, but leaves this history in preserved.

Right click on the componet or body and you should see it as an option.

I also suspect that there may be other issues in your workflow that is not using Fusion in an ideal way. If you attach a model there are a few people on here who will be able to point you in the right direction for a successful workflow.

Thank you for the responses. Attached is the file I'm working with. Forgive me, but my head keeps on thinking like I do in sketchup where components are used to link geometry when you modify and groups for unlinked geometry.

  • When deleting the component "Bottom Grill" it also deletes all 4 legs.
  • When modifying the geometry for "Grill_Fronts" if modifies both components instead of only one, but when modifying "Grill_Bottom_Side" it only modifies one component and not the mirrored component.

@g-andresen File is attached thanks

@John_Wright Thank you. Removing the component does not delete my legs 🙂

"When I modify or delete certain geometry within different components it modifies or deletes other components and/or their geometry as well"

You first need to understand the difference between a Body and a Component.  A Component is a container that contains (among other things) one or more Bodies.  When you copy/paste a Component, it creates a "component instance".  Each instance shares contents (including Bodies) with all other instances of that component.  So, if you modify a Body in a component instance, it will affect ALL instances of that Component.  If you want to create an independent copy of a Component, do a Paste New instead of just Paste.  That will create an independent copy of the component, with its own bodies, sketches, etc.

Thank you for the explanation. Do you know if it's possible to make an existing copied component "unique" so that it severs all links to the original component? Or must it be re copied and pasted as new? I use this function a lot in my sketchup workflow. I mostly use it when creating an array of components like with decking and then make 2 or 3 unique to alter the geometry to show hole or cutouts in certain parts only as an example. In this specific case I just messed up and don't know how to retrace or sever the links, i dont mind losing my timeline but not sure if it's possible in fusion. Otherwise i'll just have to redraw everything over correctly this time 🙂

Thanks

The comments I made were referring to "internal" components (that is:  those that live within the design itself, using the Create New Component command, set to "internal").  No, there is no way to make an independent component from an instance, it has to be done at Paste time (using Paste New).

But, there are other subtleties here.  If you have a Direct Modeling design, there is a command called "Make Independent", that will do this.  Unfortunately, that command has never been made available in a Parametric design.

Further, if you are using "external" components (separate designs, which are inserted into the current design), the process is different.  There is no Paste New for external components.  Instead, just make a copy of the external design, and insert that separate copy.

Yes, this is confusing, I admit...
