Best way to show dimensions?

I use fusion mainly for furniture design, and am wondering what the best way to show specific dimensions in a 2d view is? Fusion will sometimes let me pull out dimensions of certain faces of components, but not always all. I currently have to hand dimension with model lines and text boxes, which takes more time than I feel like I should expend. Any help would be greatly appreciated! -Nick

@Anonymous,

Do you have any examples of what you are trying to do?  I myself use Fusion for furniture design and would be happy to share some tips.

Cheers,

Hi Nick,

Fusion is set up like many parametric modelers where the primary 3D design is done parametrically and the 2d drawing is really a documentation of the design used for fabrication/manufacturing.

in this example I've created the design of my gate then created the "drawing" of my design subsequent to the 3D model, but from the 3D model.  So as updates to the 3D model occurs, my 2D drawings are able to maintain a link to the parent and update as I see fit.

Here I've created my drawing and can be very explicit about what dimensions to show and leave out the unnecessary information

Here is an example where I've turned on the visibility of the Sketch for the panels of the gate and use the measure command to show one overall dimension.  This is sometimes suitable for quick screen grabs, but if you really want to show actual dimensions, especially for fabrication, there may be too much or too little information turning on the sketch dimensions.Screen Shot 2017-05-24 at 2.57.57 PM.png

hope this helps,

Mike,

Thanks for the interest. I am in my second year working with furniture designing, and basically am looking for ways to make the process more streamlined. The response from Jaimie was very helpful, but it would be great to absorb any tips you have in regards to producing dimension sketches, as well as render images of a final project? (As I mentioned in my previous post, I had been using model lines to show dimensions). Now that I have semi gotten the hang of things, it would be great to see anything more furniture designers utilizing Fusion are doing in their process. One direct question is how to accomplish a live edge on a table? If you have ever worked with this and have any thoughts, I would be grateful. I'm attaching a few images demonstrating dimensions on projects on a work in progress project, as well as a render, for any feedback.

Thanks!

Nick
