Best way to boolean add bodies/components

I made a bunch of boxes, and I want to "join" them all together to make a quick-and-dirty thing; let's pretend they are pieces of metal and will be welded. I have tried some obvious things, I had some resulting issues, and I wonder if I am going about this in a good way.

I used modify>combine.  I assigned the lowest component arbitrarily as the target and the other components as the tools.

After this, I was very surprised to find that A new version of the thing was created, all my input boxes remained, AND there was one seam left. Yuk!  (Note 1) .

I started a new drawing, I was careful to define 4 boxes as components , and in the combine dialog, I was careful to not check "new body". This time, no seams, but I got three components, apparently two empty and the new part was in one.

Can someone tell me what is the nice, clean way to do this?  I want to make sure that dependencies to sketch profiles and parametric relationships are preserved if possible, as I might figure out how to use these one day.

Thanks,

(Note 1: Detail: The boxes were created starting on various planes including drawings on constructions planes at angles to the cartesian axes.  Each box was defined as a component. )

Is there a way I could email it to you without showing it to the whole world?  Couldn't I do that, then summarize what went wrong and the solution afterwards so the community can benefit?

Thanks,
