Best approach to modeling a spherical gear?

I'm trying to model a spherical gear similar to the one in the photo below. My plan was to sketch a graph and then project the sketch to the surface of the sphere, but Fusion won't let me extrude the projected sketch. Any suggestions on another approach to model this spherical gear? Thanks

You'll note that each row of teeth must have a different form in order for the gear to actually work which is probably why a patent was granted.
