Beginner - stuck on how to create this?

Hi, I'm new to Fusion 360 and trying to design a bracket for an Irig Pro. Everything was going fine until the attached screenshot...I can't draw the rectanglular shape I want going from one side to the other. If I try to draw a rectangle on the side ready for me to push pull across...it just doesn't draw a rectangle? I click and try to draw a rectangle...but it just doesn't work!

If I try to draw on the inside of the shape I can't 'see through' the other layers..even if I keep trying to 'zoom' through them. How do you draw in 2D mode...through an inside shape?

If I try to draw in 3D mode...I just can't get the rectangle to draw in the right spot.

I'll attach an export of the file.

Any clues at all appreciated! Thank you.IrigBox.PNG

Well I managed to do it a different way...by extruding the top centre rail down. My key two questions are:

1.) How do you isolate one part to focus on a 2D look at that so you can draw on it? ie. If I highlight an inside face...I want to just see that face in 2D...at the moment I find myself 'looking' through all the outside faces

2.) I'm also struggling to add lines retrospectively. ie. In this picture I want add another rectangle so I can just extrude down in the section that is yellow. In Google Sketchup I simply draw a rectangle and extrude down....in Fusion 360 I try drawing a rectangle and it just doesn't work...is there a different workflow here? Thanks for any tips.Rectangle.PNG

Hi Claas Kuhnen thank you so much for that reply. That is probably the most impressive support I have ever received in a forum with an actual screencast reply!! Thank you! 🙂

I will try what you've suggested. I think I'm just missing something quite basic...but will follow your screencast and see how I go.

Thank you again!

Edit:

After going through your screen cast...the key thing I just can't do is draw the lines you're talking about. I select the face...press the line tool...click....and nothing happens! It just does not draw....it is very confusing...

For some reason I cannot draw more lines on the model...

The basics will be hard to understand, if you have not done any tutorials for sketches.

Most modelling is done with history turned on, and making 2d sketches to operate 3d features.

to retrospectly add detail to sketch, you need to edit it, this will take you back in history to the time you made the sketch, update and finish sketch, all features you did not break, will up date.

When editing a sketch you can slice with tick box all things in the way from the sketch panel in the window.

Might help...

Thanks for that....so is it possible to extrude this centre piece down shown in the picture?

Or do I in Fusion 360 need to have designed this all first in 2D? ie. you can't retrospectively add a rectangle?

With Sketchup...I'd draw in a rectangle...and push pull down...

anyway apologies for my ignorance here...I'm just trying to figure this out! 🙂Howdown.PNG

I think this is your problem.

You need to either select the face then right click and select create sketch then draw on it or:

You need to go to the sketch section in the ribbon toolbar and select sketch at the bottom then create sketch and select the face you want to draw on then draw on it.

Thank you...I think you are onto my problem there PhilProcarioJr

That was my problem....I needed to get into that sketch mode again...and I can now add lines...

Anyway I'll do some more tutorials...I seem to learn best with a combination of having a go at things then following tutorials...

Thanks all...time for bed here in Australia!

I can see this software has great potential for really accurate modelling. Thanks for great support:)
