Balloon insert doesn't work

I try to insert balloons in an assembly drawing. Now I get always the error "A balloon can only be placed on a component". I'm confused because the parts in the 3D assembly are all components... Does anyone already had this problem and found a solution?

PS: I've got this problem only in the mac-version of fusion 360. In the windows-version everyting works fine...

Hi dani,

Sorry to hear you're having a problem with balloons.  The functionality on Mac should be identical to Windows.  Just confirming, you're opening the same drawing of the same design on both Mac and Windows, and placing the balloon to the same object in the view and seeing different behavior?  If the design contains a mix of components/bodies you could see this if you try to place a balloon to a body, but if it's all components somethihg sounds wrong.  On Mac can you place a parts list in the same drawing?  Does it match one placed on Windows?

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris

Yes, it is the same drawing and I tried different components. On Windows I can place a partlist, on Mac I get only a small frame without any parts, numbers, materials...

Thanks,

Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for the details. From what you describe (Mac only, small box for a parts list), it sounds like a known issue we have when Component names in the design contain "double-byte" characters.  Can you confirm whether there are any special characters (Japanese, Chinese, Umlauts, etc.) in any of the component names in this design?  If this isn't the case, we'll need to keep digging.  If there are please let me know what they are, I'd like to double-check the fix in our in-house build for your case.

We're working on a update now that will fix a number of these globalization issues with drawings, and this should be available in the next few weeks.

Thanks,

Chris

I am following the tutorial 08_Drawings.pdf on a Mac and am getting the same error message "a balloon can only be placed on a component".

The file is 08_Drawings_Utility_Knife in Basic Training.

Hi mward74TPR,

I just tried this here on both Mac and Windows and it's working for me.  Are you able to place a parts list in the drawing?  The six parts of the design are separate components and should appear in the parts list (and be balloon-able).  I'm wondering if when selecting the item to add the balloon to you might be selecting some other (non-component) entity, like the hatch in a section view?  Which Mac OS version are you on?

Thanks,

Chris

I just re-loaded the same file, after quitting and re-starting Fusion, and it is working now! This is clicking on the same edges that failed before, so I have no idea what the problem was.

Hi mward74TPR,

OK, not sure what the issue was, but glad to hear it's working now.  Thanks for looking at drawings, and from my friend across the aisle who created them, for looking at the lessons too.

Thanks,
Chris

Hi,

I think i may have a similar problem to the guys above...

I'm not able to assign balloons to sub-components... It works for components just fine though.

Is this just how it is at the moment, or is this a bug?

Thanks! Alex

Hi Alex,

What is happening when you try to assign a balloon to a sub-component?  Currently the expected behavior would be that a balloon placed to any sub-component would get the same item number as the parent component.

One option for placing unique balloons to sub-components would be to place another base view in the drawing of just that parent component, you can do this from the component browser in the model, then select the existing drawing instead of creating a new one:

Sub-Components.png

This will allow you to place a parts list for just that component view, and get unique item numbers for the sub-components.

We do have plans on our roadmap to offer more customization and control of the parts list, including support for sub-components, but this is still in the planning stages.

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris,

Thanks for getting back to me. At the moment It's not letting me select the part, and just gives me the "balloon can only be placed on a component" warning...

Thanks for the workaround, that'll give me what i needed!

Editable parts lists would be really useful to see.

Thanks again,

Alex

Any update/news for this problem?
I have the same impossibility when working on my exploded isometric perspective on the drawing.

I'm having the same problem. Everything is a component and I get the message "A balloon can only be placed on a component" anyway. 5 year old problem? When is this going to be resolved?

I'm having the same problem too. There is a component that is  not possible to add a balloon.

Honestly, I don't understand why but now it works.

I have delete all the components and I have inserted a new base view. Then, when I have used the balloon tool, it has work as espected.

Thank you for all 🙂
