When you drag components are you creating a snapshot?

Check out the below help topic and let me know if this helps or if you have any questions?

Hi Nathan. That help topic explanation is I think a little unclear- does the Snapshot “maintain” a position of the component before a move so you can return? Or after a move as a reference? Or both? Linguistically it sounds as if it is both “maintaining” the position and allowing the component to move- which sounds like a contradiction. I think a simple example or picture would help to clarify.Smiley Wink

Hey Ron,

The Snapshot just "remembers" the position of a components. It's like a polaroid camera, capturing a moment.

Snapshots capture and store positional information about components but do not otherwise enforce any positional constraints or impact the available degrees of freedom for a component.

If you've ever seen the  "Some Components Have Been Moved" warning message during the creation of a Joint, it's because there is a pending snapshot that has not been captured in the timeline. Fusion 360 is just warning you that it will create a snapshot if you select Continue or revert to the original position if you select Revert

Whenever you move a component (not a body), you'll see the "Position" panel appear on the right side of the ribbon. You can choose to save a snapshot of the new position or revert back to the old position after a move.

An awesome benefit of snapshots is that they can be used to create Positional Modeling features in your design.

Around the 5 minute mark in the below youtube video, this is demonstrated in depth.

I hope this helps clarify a bit more about Snapshots. Let me know if you have any questions, I'm happy to help.

Thanks,

Snapshot will show you where you were at some point in time but everything you created after that is gone. I do not have a lot of cad, 3D design or for that matter computer experience so I might not have explained it properly. most of my experience is Sketchup 8 which is easy to create things in but has absolutely no animation capabilities.I started with some basic components and mirrored them to the orher side of my center section. Then I was working on one side creating components  and moving parts to get the motion that I was lookig for. then I wanted to mirror all the new sfuff to the other side but had to get back to the original mirrored position to do it. I finally figured out that if you turn on the origins of the components you can align them to the design origins and got back to where I needed to be. Watching some other videos I found that you can create component in other components and if you create a component first turn it on then create your sketches it makes it a lot easier to find them when you wnt to change something. Now I have another problem after I mirrored all the parts inserted my second hydraulic cylinder, I crated all my joints now the second side works perfectly but the first side won't move. Must have a joint conflict that it' not telling me about.

It's a steep learning curve but it"s easier than the Geomagic one that I tried out.
