Aligned Section View

Wow I must be missing something really elemental.  I am am attempting to make an aligned  section view as shown in the screencast. I hover over the center of the top, hold down the shift key and position the first point, then the center and then I try to hover over the center of the hole and select the shift key again thinking this will allow me to extend the section line at the same angle.  No Go.  There doesn't seem to be any way to exactly position the angled section line when the endpoint is off the part.  So I stuck it at the center of the hole and tried to move it later by editing the section line.  Still NoGo.  Alt keys Cntrl Keys Shift keys.  I eventually starting moving the center of the line and then repositioning the center of the section.  That's not sane - I am obviously missing something.  Can someone educate me?  I found nothing after scouring the internet for 30 minutes.  I should have at least found other people complaining if there was no way to do this.! Thanks.

Double click on the cutting line and edit the position after creation.

Hi Matt,

Yes, unfortunately this is not (yet) possible.  You can acquire the center but then once you try to extend the section line segment out past the edge of the part the last snap point is lost.  We should retain that snap point then extend the section line along that same angle.  We are currently tracking this issue internally as a bug (FDWG-3526) and I will re-forward the request to the team.

Thanks for bringing this up and sorry for the current limitation.

Thanks,
Chris

Some fake spheres placed appropriately for the section line end points and then subsequently suppressed in the timeline seems to be a work around but not terribly professional.  I will anxiously await a fix.

Thanks Chris, for your honesty especially.  I have been using CAD since CADAM on an IBM 360 mainframe and it is refreshing to have an employee of a software firm call a bug a bug instead of a requested enhancement!

Hi matt.soule,

We may have a workaround for the problem you are facing in creating aligned section views, using dimensions to generate the necessary snap points in situations like this:

sectionLine.PNG

Here is a Screencast to illustrate this: https://knowledge.autodesk.com/community/screencast/6c5f5a4b-142f-49ec-93da-06b87d761744

Please let us know if that works for you.

Thanks,

Krithika

Thank you Krithika.  Much less kludgy than making a fake sphere for the points - and I learned how to dimension to orthogonal axes!
