3D object part sizing

First off, let me apologize if this is in the wrong area.   I am completely new to CAD, except for a little playing around with Autocad and Solidworks, but those experiences were very limited.

My question is this...  I have two 3D pieces (bodies, components?) that I am trying to size so they will fit together.  However, how do I utilize the dimension of one part to contstruct the other?  I was thinking about using construction lines, but was having difficulty getting that to work too.

I have uploaded a screencast to give you an idea of what I am trying to do.  Secondly, I have been through a lot of the tutorials, and maybe this was covered and I missed it?  If so, please direct me to the subject matter so that I may review it again.

Thank you for whatever help that you may offer.

Regards,
Neil

It would me much easier to explain on your own desing if you could share it. Export it as a .f3d and attach it to your next post. I'll talke a look at it.

I've looked at your file and, to be honest I'd start over clean.

Rule #1 in Fusion 360 for most newcomrrs is to Create a component and activate it. The acivation of new components is actually automatic.

You cannot assemble bodies, just components etc.

In general I'd recommend for you to watch through the videos and trininig materials in the learing section, which you can access from the top menu on the Forum.

Ouch!  That bad huh.   LOL.

I figured that it may be a good idea to start over.   Back to the videos and learning section I go.  Thank you for your help 🙂

One work flow you should try is after creating the first object create a new sketch. From the sketch dropdown go to project/include and choose project. When the dialog appears select the body you want your new body to fit within. What this will do is give you an outline of your first body in the current sketch and you can size to that. It will even allow you to snap to the projected lines.

Hope that helps.

Excellent!!  That is exactly what I was looking for.  🙂

I am going to start over with the drawing and utilize your suggestion.  Again, thank you.

Cool. Do that after you've watched that fist 50-60 minutes of tutorials and while remembering Fusion 360 Rule #1 Create and activate component 😉

If you skip the above you'll just shortchange yourself!
