2d spline and 3d spline, difference in handles

If I draw a spline in a sketch, close the sketch and then move the spline in 3D off the plane the spline handles are not possible to manipulate any more. In the attached sketch, the lift spline is lifted off the construction plane.

Am I missing something?

I want a spline in 3D space that can be "rebent" in 3D space.

You can manipulate the 3d spline handles, but you can only to do so with the Move command triad, 

Select the end point of the handle, then Move Command and the move triad will snap to the selected end point.

To select another end point, you follow the Move - Triad routine,

Not to go into details but for the moment I would also stay away from 3D sketches in general as there

are some problems with the engine that can make them easily break.
