Unable to hide ground plane grid

Hey everyone,

I've been having a slight problem that appeared after an update a few weeks ago that's been driving me up a wall: The ground grid plane cannot be hidden using any control or setting that I've found. due to the nature of the things I work on this has become of great annoyance and today it reached the point that I had to stop working because the of interference in ability to see the reference images clearly through the grid. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get rid of it?

For what you show, this is how I would turn it off.  You did not mention your operating system but MAC seems to have had more graphics issues mentioned lately.
